Kia ora koutou, I don’t know about you but sometimes I can’t really think what I’d like to eat. Its not that I don’t have food in the cupboard or fridge or in the garden, its more that sometimes, I need to be coaxed with something special. Or different. Like I’m sick of the ordinasry combinations and want domething different but don’t know what.

As there’s only me to do the coaxing and as I’m the cook as well its a bit like I divide into two people, one asking questions and one frowning and saying, ‘No, don’t feel like that, no don’t want that either.’

This is not because I’m old although I think I’ve got a bit more picky with age but I’ve always been a bit inclined to a seesaw approach when it comes to food.

I’m very good at making sure I eat reasonably well – heard too many stories about people neglecting themselves and living on bread and cheese – I’m fairly firm about the three meals a day. It’s what’s in the meals I sometimes find difficult.

Also I go off things. Do you do that? I can have toasted muesli (made by me) with cream, for breakfast for months, then one day I get up and I don’t want it. I don’t want eggs, I want weetbix (dry with lashings of butter and jam), which lasts a while before I go off it and want something else.

Yesterday I was feeling very picky and when me, the cook, tried to tempt me, the diner, with various suggestions, I, the diner, wasn’t interested.

‘Beef sausages?’

‘Nah.’

‘But I’ve defrosted them.’

‘Oh all right then.’

‘Silver beet? Lovely and fresh from the garden? Steamed?

I frown.

‘I know, I could fry the beef sausages, steam the silver beet, open a tin of apricots and you could have a couple with the sausage?’

I start to get interested. I like fruit with sausages and I like apricots.

‘I could do some savoury eggs?’

‘Now there’s a thought. Beef sausages with apricots, steamed silver beet, and two halves of savoury eggs on the side? You like them all.’

‘Just not together. At least before now. Oh, okay, sounds good. I’ll try it.’

I ate it all up, enjoyed every mouthful. Might not be strictly traditional but who cares? Covered all the food groups too.

Sometimes its good to be tempted to try different mixes or variations. Now, what shall I eat for dinner tonight? Got any suggestions?
