Monday was a day when I wanted to go back to bed and wake up and start the day again. I had the iPad on charge and turned it off, put it away, began working on the laptop or from the laptop I should say because I’ve now got this large screen to make life easier. .

In about an hour I made a cup of tea and opened the fridge to get the milk. All the lights were off. Oh dear. I checked everything, checked the outside meter box, all seemed okay. I texted my frtendly neighbour to come check my checks, ‘No,’ she agreed, ‘its only the fridge and nothing looks out of place on the meter board.’

She got a friend who was visiting her to have a look. He pulled the fridge out again and checked everything. He checked the microwave, the lights, all good. He checked the outside box. All good.

Then a brilliant deduction – look at all the switches on the bench and lo – one was off when it should be on. These switches were there when I came here and this was the first time I’d ever used one and in doing so unwittingly turned the fridge off.

A light bulb moment…

My iPad was charging on a white point about half an inch away from the other unused two white ones which I’d never really noticed but this particular morning I’d turned one of them off and in doing so I turned the fridge off.

I felt an idiot, but later I realised that what happened was a good thing. I’ll always check there first should I ever go to the fridge go off again. I could blame my eyesight but I know it was simply  carelessness. In too much of a hurry.

I also know that younger people do this sort of heedless thing too, I did them myself when young. but – but, there’s something about doing it when you’re old that’s different.  No-one says, ‘Oh she turned the wrong switch off because she’s young,’ now do they?
