Kia ora, I have a cold. I haven’t had a cold for some years, at least five. I take it personally.

It snuck up on me – I was at the Playreading on Sunday which went magnificently – thanks to Sarah Delahunty and brilliant cast – and the afternoon tea was pretty good too. Jan made some delicious christmas mince tarts, so yummy it was all I could do not to grab the plate and run away behind the hall and eat them all before anyone else got one. My christmas cake was delicious too. Either I put the golden syrup in and didn’t remember it or it doesn’t need it.

With her usual style Sunny had organised and prepared the hall and the lunch and the table looked pretty good. Lynn and her friend on the ticket table, lovely smiles those two, welcomed everyone.

The audience was just the best. It always is. I don’t know whether its the Paekakariki air or that they’re just a bunch of really nice people who all happen to live in the one place – whatever – they are supportive and its always great to see them.

Nonnita Mann was there. She knew Robert Lord really well as did Sunny, and there were many affectionate tributes paid to him during the afternoon. Both Jan and I have stayed in the Robert Lord Writers Cottage in Titan Street, Dunedin which Robert left to be used by writers who wanted time out to work on a particular project.

Toewards the end of the afternoon I felt a little niggle in my nose and thought uh-uh – hay fever. That often happens after rain. Saturday and Sunday had showers. Don’t ask me why.

On Monday the dreadful truth was revealed – this was not hay fever – this was a cold. Of gigantic proportions. I cancelled all appointments and engagements for the week, even ukulele group. The last thing anyone needs is my cold.

So I have been through the day and night of sneezing, another day of coughing, my muscles are so sore from coughing even breathing hurts, I sniffle every time I breathe as well, my nose is red and I carry tissues with me at all times. Very attractive.

To crown it all I screwed the lid on the tea caddy and somehow got it crooked on the thread and now its stuck. Bursting into tears is one option, screaming obscenities is another – this week is turning out to be the week from hell. To crown it all a strange thing happened to ny website yesterday – I won’t bore you with the details. – its better now, wish I was.

However, it looks like a sunny day – the cold can’t go on much longer – I didn’t have too bad a night – so all’s well…
