Kia ora, yesterday I drove to Pahiatua to visit my brother and his partner. It was a lovely day to drive. I seemed to be almost the only one going in that direction and very few passed me going the other way. I began to think maybe everyone had been whisked away to another planet and I was just going to keep on driving forever.

However, Pahiatua was still there and we had a great time – lunch exactly what we all like – bread, cheese, ham, hardboiled eggs, relish, asparagus, all on plates or dishes in the middle of the table. Tea or coffee as required. We all helped ourselves and made sandwiches or just ate little bits of this and that and enjoyed the great bread they’d bought just that morning. Pahiatua has a great baker.

There’s something very relaxing both for the hosts and the guests when this kind of meal is served. We all like it and decided some time ago that this is the way we’d do it whenever we met. There’s no fuss, time is not a problem, everyone eats as much or as little of whatever they fancy. The point of our meeting is to be together and catch up and that is what we do.

I left with some runner bean seedlings, 2 jars of Tomato relish, 8 balls of wine-colured wool, needles and pattern, plus instructions how to handle the funny looking needles, (two needle ends joined by a twisty wire). Now to work out the pattern….
